Snoring and Sleep Apnea in Children

Snoring and restless sleep can signal an airway that needs a closer look.

Snoring and disrupted sleep in children can be a sign that the airway is narrow or partly blocked during sleep. At Happy Hoppers Pediatric Dentistry and Braces in Methuen, MA, Dr. Bhoomi Kotak evaluates how a child's jaw and airway are developing and, where orthodontics can help, guides healthy growth to support better breathing at night. For a suspected sleep disorder, we work alongside your child's physician.

Snoring Is Common, But Not Always Harmless

Snoring Is Common, But Not Always Harmless Not every child who snores has a sleep disorder. Snoring happens when airflow is partly blocked and the tissues vibrate. Sleep apnea is different and more serious: breathing repeatedly pauses during sleep, which disrupts rest. Because the two can look similar from the outside, persistent snoring, gasping, or long pauses in breathing are worth evaluating rather than ignoring. A diagnosis of sleep apnea is made by a physician, often with a sleep study.

The Role of Airway Orthodontics

The Role of Airway Orthodontics Where snoring is linked to how the jaw and airway have developed, orthodontic treatment can help create more room for easier breathing. Options include a palatal expander to widen a narrow upper jaw, which increases nasal airflow, and functional appliances that guide jaw position. This supports healthy breathing during sleep. It is one part of care, not a replacement for medical evaluation, and for a diagnosed sleep disorder we coordinate with your child’s doctor or a sleep specialist. Link: Airway Orthodontics

Frequently Asked Questions

Is snoring normal for children?

Occasional snoring can be harmless, but regular, loud snoring is worth evaluating. It can signal a narrow airway, and sometimes a sleep disorder that needs a physician’s assessment.

An orthodontist can help support healthy breathing where jaw and airway development are involved, and can be part of a care team. A sleep apnea diagnosis and its overall management come from a physician.

Loud snoring, pauses or gasping during sleep, restless sleep, daytime tiredness, and trouble focusing. If you notice these, an evaluation is worthwhile.

Widening a narrow upper jaw creates more room and can improve nasal airflow, since the roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nose. It is one option we consider after evaluation.
